Strong Custom Authentication or SCA is here! This effects WordPress merchants (and everyone else) in the European Union or the European Economic Area (EEA). So what is this exactly? Strong Customer Authentication applies to “customer-initiated” online payments within Europe. Meaning if you have a customer come to your eCommerce WordPress website and they initiate a payment then SCA must be used.

In a nutshell: SCA is essentially 2-Factor Authentication for card transactions.

SCA does not apply to merchant-initiated payments such as subscriptions, recurring payments, and fees. Also, it does not matter in person. IT only applies to websites that sell items on the EU.

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

According to Stripe.com its: Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a new European regulatory requirement to reduce fraud and make online payments more secure. To accept payments and meet SCA requirements, you need to build additional authentication into your checkout flow. SCA requires authentication to use at least two of the following three elements.

  1. Something the Customer KNOWS (Example: A password or a Pin)
  2. Something the Customer HAS (Example: Phone or Token Hardware)
  3. Something the Customer IS (Example: Fingerprint or Facial Recognition)

If these requirements are not met then the bank will deny payment or they should technically start on September 14, 2019, which has come and gone.

Stripe.com has an excellent article explaining each piece of SCA and 3D Secure 2.0. Check it out here: https://stripe.com/docs/strong-customer-authentication

What is 3D Secure 2.0?

3D Secure is a system that verifies if it is you or not. You may have seen this before with the “Verified by Visa Program” which takes you away from the merchant’s site to a Visa site and asks you question slike you Visa password etc.

Now there’s a new system and tool named 3D Secure 2.0 that makes it easier to meet SCA requirements without disrupting the user experience which is great. 3D Secure 2.0 sends more than 100 data points on each transaction to the cardholder’s bank. The cardholder uses this information to assess the transaction’s risk and either accepts or denies this.
